Bison Coffee House
About This Spot
Stepping into Bison Coffee House on Heslington Road feels like walking into a quietly treasured neighborhood nook, where time softens and daily rhythms slow just enough to savor the moment. The space hums with a gentle warmth—think the comforting murmur of light conversation, the occasional clink of a spoon against a cup, and a welcoming nod from familiar faces behind the counter. It’s a spot that invites you to settle in and breathe, whether you’re escaping a busy day or simply craving a pause.
The atmosphere blends a cozy, almost homely charm with a touch of creative flair. This isn’t your typical chain coffee shop; instead, Bison offers a quietly quirky vibe with its thoughtful touches—like the unexpected dog gallery that makes the space feel inclusive and delightfully personal. Here, friendliness isn’t just an element of service but woven into the very fabric of the experience.
The menu reflects this thoughtful approach, easing you into a journey of comforting flavors and clever combinations. Imagine the soft warmth of a latte or flat white, the enticing richness of a cortado, and a surprising twist in a cold brew nitro coffee with tonic and lime that intrigues and refreshes. On the food side, there’s an approachable selection of toasties and bagels that offer both familiar comforts and creative departures—vegan and gluten-free options thoughtfully included, making the experience feel welcoming for many.
Whether it’s the melt-in-your-mouth brownies, the playful mingling of coffee and cherry or chocolate in a cake, or a savory vegan chicken bagel, each bite and sip carries the quiet assurance of careful attention. This is a place to linger over your drink, let the textures and tastes unfold, and enjoy the ease of unhurried company—your own or shared.
Those who find themselves here often speak of a certain calm that stays with them after. It’s not just the coffee or the food, but the way this place anchors itself as a small refuge in the heart of York, a space where the simplest moments acquire a little extra meaning through warmth, creativity, and genuine connection.

Very friendly service and great place for a chill out. It is several days later but I am still thinking about the cheese on toast I had. Highly recommend.

Lovely little place, good selection of bagels, toasties, sweet treats and drinks. Offers vegan and gluten free options (including breads and bagels) and is dog friendly, they even have a dog gallery wall! Would recommend the cold brew nitro coffee with tonic and lime, never heard of it before and wasn’t sure how it would taste but it was fantastic! Reasonably priced and cozy!

Lovely little quirky cafe, called in with husband and daughter on a Sunday afternoon. Food was really nice, myself and my husband ordered cheese and ham toasties with chutney, lovely thick slices of proper ham and thick slices of cheese. Our daughter ordered halloumi, avocado and hot honey bagel which she said was lovely. On the way out we spotted the cake counter and couldn't pass it by without taking a piece home. That too was delicious. We will definitely visit again when in the area.

Excellent cafe. Real personality. Everything is done with charm and attention to detail. The quality of the coffee is exceptional. Nick, the owner, puts 110% into everything he does, and the results reflect this. I also attended one of his evening Italian nights. It was brilliant, food great and delicious. much better than going to an Italian restaurant. We were made to feel special.
